By rail and ferry
The locomotives were lifted onto well-deck wagons after a week of concerted effort. Smaller items such as wheels, truck frames and sand domes were stowed aboard. After 700km of rail haulage and a four-hour ferry transfer Wb 292 and Wb 299 arrived safely in Wellington.
